Newbury Town Council will hold an Armed Forces Day Royal Engineers Freedom of Newbury Parade in the town of Newbury on Saturday 28th June 2025. After a long association, Newbury was immensely proud to grant the Freedom of the Town to the Corps of Royal Engineers during a formal parade in September 1997. The Corps has subsequently exercised its freedom twice, in 2002 and 2014.
The parade on 28th June will be the town’s main Armed Forces Day event and the initial activity organised to celebrate the 200th anniversaries of 13 and 14 Geographic Squadrons and 16 Geographic Support Squadron. The three Squadrons are currently sub-units of 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic), which was based in Denison Barracks, Hermitage until 2014. The marching contingent on the parade will comprise of serving soldiers from the Regiment and the Royal School of Military Survey, which remains based in Denison Barracks, the Nottinghamshire Reserve band of the Royal Engineers, and Royal Engineer Veterans.
The proceedings will commence with the main parade stepping off at 10.30am from the Royal British Legion on Pelican Lane and marching the length of Northbrook Street, ending in the Market Place. This event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
