Last year, SHAPE-UK unveiled the only Commonwealth War Memorial outside of London, located in Bradford, to ensure equal recognition for those from Commonwealth nations who contributed to the two World Wars and helped rebuild Great Britain thereafter. This year, we will continue to honour the Armed Forces (AF) and highlight the invaluable contributions of the Commonwealth.
Our events will showcase the diverse roles undertaken by the Armed Forces. A military historian will present a collection of military memorabilia and historical resources, offering insight into how the AF operated in past eras. A photographic exhibition will illustrate the various global missions of the Armed Forces, including peacekeeping efforts and humanitarian aid operations.
We have invited AF units to participate by setting up interactive displays featuring military transport, equipment, and career information, showcasing the vast range of opportunities available within the Forces. Cadet organisations will also be actively involved. Visitors of all ages will have the chance to engage in activities led by AF volunteers and reservists.
A specially produced film on the Armed Forces and the Commonwealth contribution will be screened at multiple venues throughout the event. Local AF units will have dedicated stalls and displays, while guests, visiting AF personnel, and the public will be provided with refreshments, including food and beverages. A pop-up exhibition will further enhance the experience.
This year, we encourage the public to bring their relativesβ war medals and memorabilia, which will be digitised as part of our effort to preserve these important historical records. Volunteers and staff will also document personal stories from AF veterans to digitise and share online and with the wider UK population.
Streamers and posters will be displayed in tribute to the Armed Forces community, expressing gratitude to both UK and Commonwealth veterans. Additionally, there will be a designated area where members of the public can informally connect with Armed Forces personnel, learn more about military roles, and personally express their appreciation.
Keep an eye on our website and local media for details about the fascinating talks scheduled throughout Armed Forces Week, which will cover key AF campaigns in World War I and World War II.
